Arm pain is a common problem affecting daily life, and many people search for the answer to the question “Why does my arm hurt?” The pain may originate from muscles, tendons, joints, nerves, or the neck, and each cause presents a different symptom profile. The sections below are prepared based on the topics users wonder about most and search for most frequently.

Arm Pain Caused by Muscles and Tendons

Muscle strains, soft tissue injuries, and tendon inflammation are among the most common causes of arm pain. Daily movements, sudden overload, and repetitive activities can strain these structures and lead to pain.

Muscle Strains Due to Overuse

Repetitive and intense use of the arm—such as typing on a computer for long periods, lifting weights, or continuously performing a task with the same movement—can cause micro-strains in the muscles. These strains manifest as tenderness in muscle fibers, stiffness, and pain that increases with movement. In particular, pain that recurs after resting is a sign of this type of strain.

Tendon Inflammation (Tendinitis)

Inflammation of the tendons connecting muscles to bone leads to arm pain, particularly around the elbow and shoulder. Tendinitis generally develops after repetitive use, incorrect movement, or sudden loading. The pain increases when pressure is applied over the affected tendon and becomes prominent during movements such as raising or rotating the arm.

Muscle Spasm and Stiffness

Stress, fatigue, or sudden awkward movement can cause muscle spasms. In this situation, moving the arm becomes difficult, and a feeling of muscle stiffness develops. Spasms can sometimes last for days and cause greater discomfort, especially at night.

Arm Pain Due to Nerve Compression

Arm pain does not always originate from the arm itself; nerve compression can cause pain radiating down the arm. Because nerves in the neck and shoulder area extend toward the arm, any compression there can cause pain felt along the entire arm.

Radiating Arm Pain Due to Cervical Disc Herniation

Deterioration in the structure of the discs between the cervical vertebrae can put pressure on nerves. This pressure causes pain in the form of electric shock sensations, tingling, numbness, and burning along the arm. Bending the head forward or staying in the same position for a long time often exacerbates symptoms.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Nerve Entrapments

When the median nerve in the wrist is compressed, pain can occur in the lower arm, particularly in the wrist and hand. Long periods of keyboard and mouse use, keeping the wrist bent, or working with vibrating devices pave the way for this type of nerve compression. The pain is usually accompanied by numbness and tingling.

Nerve Compression Originating from the Shoulder

Structural defects in the shoulder joint, muscle impingement, or tendinitis can compress nerves and cause radiating pain down the arm. This condition becomes especially pronounced when raising the arm upward or reaching behind.

Arm Pain Due to Joint Problems

Problems in the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints of the arm are also among the major causes of arm pain.

Elbow Tendinitis (Tennis – Golfer's Elbow)

Resulting from excessive loading of the tendons around the elbow, this condition causes sharp pain, especially during gripping movements and when bending or straightening the arm. It is frequently seen in athletes and desk workers.

Shoulder Joint Problems

Shoulder impingement, rotator cuff injuries, or problems in the shoulder capsule can cause pain in the upper arm or along the entire arm. In particular, pain increases when lifting and rotating the arm, and arm strength may decrease.

Arthritis and Joint Wear

Wear and tear of cartilage tissue in the joints over time can cause pain, stiffness, and sometimes swelling during movement. Arthritis-related arm pain usually increases in the morning and may ease slightly with movement throughout the day.
